Then the next morning, he walked into the kitchen smiling.
“Good news.”
Ilooked up.
“Holloway got me the shore position.”
I froze.
“What?”
“Approved.”
He grinned.
“No more months away.”
Mr. Holloway was Ryan’s manager.
Ryan had mentioned wanting to impress him.
But I hadn’t known a permanent shore job was even being discussed.
Months earlier, that news would have been everything I wanted.
Ryan home every night.
Help with the girls.
A normal family.
Now it was the worst possible news.
“You wanted me home.”
He smiled.
“Now you’ve got me.”
Then he added casually:
“I invited Holloway to dinner Friday.”I stared.
“To thank him.”
He opened the fridge.
“Cook something nice.”
I forced myself to smile.
Thursday morning, I dressed for my meeting.
Ryan came downstairs jangling his keys.
“I’ve got things to do for the new position.”
I stared at him.
