“You’re watching the girls.”
“Can’t.”
“You promised.”
“You’ll have to move your meeting.”
“No.”
He looked annoyed.
“Claire, this promotion matters to everybody.”
“So does my job.”
“You should be supporting me.”
Then he walked out.
I stood there with forty minutes until my meeting.
Two babies.VNo childcare.
And a husband who knew exactly how dependent I was on him.
I called Gerald.
I already knew who he was.
But maybe he would at least watch his granddaughters.
“Ryan promised to stay with them.”
Gerald sighed.
“He has a lot on his plate.”
“So do I.”
“Why don’t you go back to work later?”
I closed my eyes.
“What’s the rush?”
There it was again.
My independence was optional.
Ryan’s career was essential.
I hung up.
Then called Dana.
“I hate asking this.”
“What?”
“Can youmove your appointment?”
“Give me ten minutes.”
