Ryan reached for it.
I pulled it back.
“You’re really doing this?”
“Yes.”
I opened the doorbell recording.
Then pressed play.
Ryan’s voice filled the dining room.
“They were guests, for pity’s sake! I slept with them, and that was all.”
Silence.
Mr. Holloway slowly turned toward him.
Ryan went pale.
“That was private.”
Mr. Holloway’s expression hardened.
“Were you involved with passengers while you were employed aboard?”
Ryan looked trapped.
“It was an argument.”
“Answer me.”
Ryan’s shoulders dropped.
“I made mistakes.”
Mr. Holloway stared at him.
“It won’thappen again.”
Ryan suddenly found an apology.
“Sir, please. Give me another chance.”
I sat there listening.
At the port, he couldn’t apologize to me properly.
At home, he told me to get over it.
But the moment his career was threatened, he discovered remorse.
Mr. Holloway pushed his chair back.
“You know the rules.”
