We sat around the table eating roast.
Gerald raised his glass.
“A man who puts family first.”
I almost choked.
He smiled proudly at Ryan.
“This shore job means he can finally be there for his wife and daughters.”
Mr. Holloway looked at me.
“You must be pleased.”
Ryan grinned.
“Moving ashore gives my family everything they need.”
“Tell him, babe.”
That was the moment.
He wanted me to confirm the lie.
And he was certain my fear of losing his paycheck would keep me obedient.
I put down my fork.
“Have you told Mr. Holloway about the guests?”
Ryan froze.
“What?”
“The women.”
Gerald’s face changed.
“Claire.”
“The passengers you told me about on the porch.”
Ryan stared at me.
“This is not the time.”
Gerald leaned toward me.
“Or the place.”
“I disagree.”
I placed my phone beside my plate.
