“You will not begin the shore position Monday.”
Ryan stood.
“Sir—”
“Send me that recording, Claire.”
I nodded.
“I’ll speak with HR first thing.”
He left the wine untouched.
Ryan followed him into thehallway.
I heard desperate talking.
Then the front door closed.
A moment later, Ryan stormed back into the dining room.
“You’ve cost me my job.”
I said nothing.
“How are we supposed to support those girls now?”
My mouth went dry.
Because that was the exact question that had terrified me for days.
Gerald stood.
“She endangered this whole family.”
“To get even,” he added.
I picked up my purse.
“The girls are with Dana.”
Ryan stopped.
“What?”
“I’m staying there too.”
“For how long?”
“Six weeks.”
Gerald stared.
“Andafter that?”
I had no answer.
He spread his hands.
“Two babies, Claire.”
“I know.”
“This isn’t just about you.”
