Here are five warning signs that can indicate the need for prompt — and sometimes emergency — medical assessment.
1. Difficulty Breathing
Breathing difficulty is one of the clearest reasons to seek emergency medical help.
A person with a sore throat who suddenly becomes short of breath, struggles to draw air, or develops unusual or noisy breathing should not simply wait to see whether the problem disappears.
The throat and surrounding structures form part of the upper airway. Significant swelling or another obstruction in this region can interfere with airflow.
Airway problems can progress rapidly, making time especially important.
This is very different from the mild throat irritation people commonly experience with a cold.
Someone who cannot breathe normally needs urgent assessment regardless of whether the illness began as something seemingly minor.
People around the patient should also pay attention. A seriously ill person may not always recognize how quickly their own condition is deteriorating.
