Title: The Envelope My Mother-in-Law Gave Me on My Wedding Day

Continued from our Facebook post: Claire had just torn open the envelope her mother-in-law gave her on her wedding day.

Inside was a small brass key and a folded note written in neat, careful handwriting.

"Claire, the day my son told me he was going to marry you, I went to the bank. This key opens the door to the apartment on Maple Street. It is yours and Daniel's. I bought it three years ago and have paid every bill since. The rent from the downstairs tenant covers the taxes.

I should have told you sooner. But I was afraid that if I did, you would refuse it out of pride, and you would both struggle to prove you did not need me. I know I seemed cold. I was raised in a home where love was shown by providing, not by speaking, and I never learned the other language.
