But I stopped measuring my worth by whether Tyler chose me.
I started measuring my decisions by whether they protected the life Mason and I deserved.
Months later, Mason finally flew on an airplane with his father again, this time after they had worked through the arrangements together.
Before boarding, he turned to me and waved.
“Mom!I’m going to tell Dad to make a better announcement this time!”
I laughed despite myself.
Tyler stood beside him, looking humbled but hopeful.
I waved back.
I didn’t know whether Tyler and I would ever find our way back to each other. I no longer believed that love alone could guarantee that.
But I knew this much: my son deserved a father who showed up honestly, and I deserved a life in which I never had to compete for a place in my own marriage.
