At the age of 13, she gave birth to a child, and 18 years later, on her daughter’s birthday, she received a letter from the hospital, after which the girl’s father confessed for the first time that he was hiding the truth

Emma passed that response along.

Helena respected it.

A simple card arrived a few weeks later.

It contained a short message wishing Sophie happiness and success.

There were no demands.

No emotional pressure.

No suggestion that Sophie owed her a reply.

Sophie placed it with the other family documents.

She did not respond.

And Emma did not encourage her to do so.

On another occasion, Helena mentioned that Lucas had asked whether Sophie was attending university.

Emma felt an old tension return.

She reminded Helena that information about Sophie should not be passed along without permission.

Helena apologized.

It was a reminder that rebuilding trust, even in a limited form, required more than expressing regret.

It required consistent respect.

Emma learned to recognize when a conversation left her feeling uncomfortable.

She learned that she could end a telephone call without explaining herself endlessly.

She learned that she could listen to someone's apology without accepting responsibility for making them feel better.
