Potential benefits of side sleeping
It may reduce snoring.
For some people, lying on the back allows the tongue and soft tissues of the throat to move backward, narrowing the airway. This can contribute to snoring and may worsen obstructive sleep apnea.
Sleeping on either side can reduce these position-related breathing problems in some individuals.
However, side sleeping does not eliminate every cause of snoring or sleep apnea. People who experience loud habitual snoring, pauses in breathing, or excessive daytime sleepiness should seek medical evaluation rather than relying on position changes alone.
It may improve spinal comfort.
Side sleeping can be comfortable for people who experience lower-back discomfort, especially when the knees are slightly bent and the spine is kept relatively straight.
A pillow between the knees may help prevent the upper leg from pulling the pelvis forward and twisting the lower back.
The head pillow is equally important. If it is too low, the head may drop toward the mattress. If it is too high, the neck may bend upward.
