Some stomach sleepers extend their arms overhead or twist their shoulders into uncomfortable positions. This may aggravate shoulder pain or cause morning stiffness.
If you cannot sleep in any other position
You do not necessarily need to panic if you naturally sleep on your stomach and wake up feeling well.
However, if you experience frequent neck or back pain, it may be worth experimenting with another position.
If you continue sleeping on your stomach, a relatively thin pillow—or no head pillow if comfortable—may reduce the amount your neck bends backward. A thin pillow beneath the lower abdomen may also help some people reduce lower-back strain.
These adjustments are not suitable for everyone, and they should not cause additional discomfort.
The important principle is simple: do not sacrifice comfortable breathing or tolerate persistent pain just to maintain a particular sleeping position.
