She Thought It Was Just a Sore Throat — Five Days Later, Her Life Was Gone

A 22-year-old who cannot breathe normally requires urgent help just as an older person would.

A young adult who becomes confused or severely weak during an infection still needs evaluation.

Symptoms — particularly their severity and progression — matter.

Pay Attention to the Direction of the Illness

One of the simplest ways to think about an everyday illness is to ask: Which direction is it going?

A person may still feel uncomfortable while gradually recovering. Their throat might remain sore, but the fever is improving. They may still feel tired, but they can drink normally and are beginning to regain their appetite.

That is very different from a person whose symptoms are escalating.

Perhaps the pain is becoming much stronger.

Perhaps swallowing water is suddenly difficult.

Perhaps a fever is getting worse instead of better.

Perhaps breathing sounds different.

Perhaps the person looks dramatically more unwell than they did several hours earlier.
