My husband, Tyler, has been a commercial pilot for almost nine years, but our 7-year-old son, Mason, had never actually been a passenger on a plane his dad was flying.

It was the sight of my little boy trying to understand why his father had made room in his heart for another woman while apparently forgetting to mention the child who worshipped

I wrapped my arm around Mason and kissed the top of his head.

“You did nothing wrong,” I told him. “Do you understand? Nothing.”

He nodded against my shoulder.

The rest of the flight passed in a blur.

Tyler returned to his usual announcements, discussing turbulence and our estimated arrival time as though he hadn’t just turned our lives upside down.

I sat silently, holding Mason’s hand.

Then, about twenty minutes before landing, my phone vibrated.

A message from Tyler.

Tyler: I need you to do me a favorI stared at the screen.

Another message appeared.

Tyler: Don’t make a scene. There’s someone important on this flight, and I need this to go smoothly.
