At the wedding, my son’s new bride announced that she would “allow” me to live in her old apartment. I smiled and told her I already had an estate of my own.

“Claire’s parents are moving into Aspen. Her sister Megan too, a few cousins, and Aunt Carol. Just for a while.”

A godmother’s glass struck her plate.

Evelyn stood perfectly still, trying to absorb what she’d heard.

“Into my house?”

Daniel lifted both hands, attempting to appear reasonable.

“Into the guest wing, Mom. They won’t touch your things. They sold their house in Pasadena and need space. You have plenty.”

Evelyn felt the weight of his last words.

“You have plenty.”

That was his justification.

He hadn’t asked “Can I ask for your help?” or “Would you be willing?”

He hadn’t even offered “I’m sorry for bringing this up at my wedding.”

Instead, he’d treated his mother’s property as something he could distribute whenever another family needed accommodation.

Claire approached them, her wedding veil still fastened neatly into her hair.

“My family can’t live cramped together when you have empty rooms. Besides, Daniel already said yes. And now we’re family.”
