Nor is the lesson that every problem can be solved by a kind gesture. Some situations require practical assistance, reliable information, professional support, or more substantial action. A meal cannot fix a transportation system, and a conversation cannot stop a storm.
But kindness can help people endure difficult circumstances while they work out what to do next.
That rainy evening taught me that the journey home was not the only thing worth remembering. The unexpected encounter had become part of the journey itself.
I still think of the stranger's simple question: had I eaten anything that evening?
It was such an ordinary question, yet it opened the door to a moment I had not expected. Someone had paid attention, offered help, and allowed me to accept it without pressure.
Sometimes, that is all kindness needs to be.
And sometimes, the person who makes a difficult night bearable is someone whose name we never even learn.
