A Stranger Approached Me at the Bus Station With Food… See More

That distinction stayed with me.

It is possible to help someone in a way that leaves them feeling embarrassed or indebted. It is also possible to offer help in a way that preserves their dignity.

The difference often lies in the details: asking rather than assuming, offering rather than insisting, listening rather than lecturing, and accepting a refusal without taking offense.

The stranger's approach had allowed me to receive kindness without feeling that I had lost control over my situation.

As the evening grew later, I began to feel tired in a different way. The immediate anxiety had eased enough for me to recognize how exhausted I actually was. I adjusted my bag, found a more comfortable position, and prepared to continue waiting.

The stranger remained nearby for a while, and we exchanged a few more words whenever something happened in the station.

I did not know whether we would ever meet again. We had not arranged to keep in touch, and neither of us had any reason to expect that our paths would cross a second time.
