That did not make me careless about my safety or my plans. I still kept my belongings close, paid attention to announcements, and remained in the public waiting area. A kind gesture does not mean that every stranger should automatically be trusted, and I knew it was important to remain sensible in an unfamiliar place.
But caution and openness do not have to be opposites.
I could be careful while still appreciating what had happened. I could accept a modest offer of food without assuming that I now knew everything about the person who offered it. I could recognize the generosity of the moment while maintaining the boundaries that made me feel safe.
This balance became part of what I remembered about the encounter.
The stranger had not demanded my attention. They had not insisted that I tell them personal details. They had not used the offer to pressure me into leaving the public area or giving them something in return.
