The stranger did not pretend to have a solution. They did not promise that transportation would resume soon or tell me that everything would certainly be fine. They simply acknowledged that the situation was frustrating.

As we continued talking, I learned a little about why they had food with them. They had prepared it earlier and brought it along for the journey. The weather and delays had disrupted their plans, just as they had disrupted mine.
They had not come to the station intending to rescue anyone. They were another traveler dealing with an inconvenient evening.
That made their offer feel even more meaningful.
The stranger had their own destination, their own concerns, and their own uncertainty. They could easily have kept the food for themselves and concentrated on getting through the night. Instead, when they noticed someone who appeared to be struggling, they chose to share what they had.
