I answered honestly that I had not eaten recently.
The stranger nodded and opened their bag. Inside was some food they had brought with them. They offered to share it with me.
For a moment, I simply stared.
I had expected a request, an explanation, or perhaps an awkward conversation about the weather. I had not expected an offer of food from someone who did not know me.
“Are you sure?” I asked.
The stranger assured me that there was enough to share.
Their manner was calm and matter-of-fact. They did not make a dramatic speech about kindness, nor did they appear to expect immediate gratitude. They simply seemed to recognize that I was tired, cold, and hungry, and they had something they could offer.
I hesitated for another moment.
Accepting food from a stranger in a crowded public place can feel uncomfortable, particularly when you do not know their intentions. It is sensible to be cautious. I did not want to ignore my instincts merely because the gesture appeared generous.
