But his stature was not what made his story so disturbing.

It was the way other people chose to interpret it.

His name was Roque José Florêncio, although he would become far better known by a nickname that followed him for much of his life: Pata Seca, commonly translated as “Dry Leg.”

Behind that unusual name lies a troubling story about slavery, exploitation, superstition, family, and the struggle to preserve human dignity in a society that systematically denied it.

Roque's life has been described in local histories, family recollections, and accounts preserved in the Santa Eudóxia region of São Paulo. Some versions portray him as a man deliberately selected by a wealthy landowner because of his unusual physical characteristics. According to these stories, slaveholders believed he could father large numbers of children who would eventually become part of the enslaved workforce.

The allegations are disturbing, not only because of the exploitation they describe, but also because they reveal how completely the institution of slavery could intrude into the most personal aspects of someone's existence.
