Emma looked at her daughter.
“What do you mean?”
Sophie placed the photograph back on the shelf.
“I mean we shouldn't decide someone else is too fragile to know the truth about their own life.”
Emma felt tears rising.
The words were simple.
But they captured everything she had struggled to understand.
Michael had acted from love.
Yet love had not made every choice correct.
Helena had regretted her silence.
Yet regret had not erased the damage.
And Emma herself had learned that being a devoted mother did not mean controlling every decision Sophie made.
She stepped forward and hugged her daughter.
“I think Grandpa would be very proud of the woman you've become.”
Sophie hugged her back.
“And I think he'd be proud of you, too.”
Emma closed her eyes.
For years, she had measured her success by how well she protected Sophie from pain.
Now she realized that one of the greatest gifts she could give her daughter was the confidence to face difficult truths without losing her sense of self.
