He was standing beside a bicycle, smiling toward the camera.
Sophie examined his face.
“Do I look like him?”
Emma leaned closer.
“A little, perhaps.”
“My eyes?”
“Maybe.”
Sophie looked thoughtful.
For years, she had known her biological father's name without knowing much about him as a person.
Now she was seeing images from his childhood.
There were family birthdays, summer holidays, Christmas celebrations, and school photographs.
They showed an ordinary family life.
Or at least the ordinary moments someone had chosen to photograph.
“It's strange,” Sophie said.
“What is?”
“That they had all these birthdays and holidays while we were somewhere else.”
Emma sat beside her.
“Yes.”
“Do you think they ever talked about me?”
“I don't know.”
“Do you think he wondered what I looked like?”
“I can't answer that.”
Sophie closed the album halfway.
“I thought seeing these pictures would make me feel something obvious.”
“Like what?”
