At the age of 13, she gave birth to a child, and 18 years later, on her daughter’s birthday, she received a letter from the hospital, after which the girl’s father confessed for the first time that he was hiding the truth

Emma remained quiet.

Helena continued.

“There were times I thought about contacting him again. Then I would imagine the harm another visit might cause, and I would tell myself silence was kindness.”

Emma accepted it.

“I understand.”

“But I will tell her we spoke. And I will let her decide what she wants to do.”

Helena nodded.

“That is more than I have any right to expect.”
