Emma did not open it.
“Why?”
Helena looked confused.
“Because they're part of her family history.”
“Are they?”
Helena hesitated.
Emma continued.
“I understand that those people are biologically related to Sophie. But family has meant something very different to us for eighteen years.”
Helena lowered her head.
“You're right.”
“My father was there when I needed help. My friends helped me raise Sophie. Neighbors cared about her. Teachers encouraged her. Those are the people she knows as family.”
“I understand.”
Emma leaned forward slightly.
“I don't want you thinking that a photograph album changes everything.”
“I don't.”
Helena folded her hands.
“I brought it because I have very little else I can offer you. I can't replace the years that are gone. I can't undo the decisions that hurt you. I can only be truthful now and let you decide whether that means anything.”
Emma studied her.
She did not know whether Helena had changed.
