At the age of 13, she gave birth to a child, and 18 years later, on her daughter’s birthday, she received a letter from the hospital, after which the girl’s father confessed for the first time that he was hiding the truth

Lucas.

The photograph was old and faded, but Emma recognized him.

His expression was distant.

Helena stood close beside him, one hand resting on his shoulder.

On the back of the photograph was her name.

Emma turned it over several times.

“She looks sad.”

Elisabeth glanced at it.

“Perhaps she was.”

“Do you think she really regretted what happened?”

“I believe she regretted her own failure to act. But only she can tell you what that regret means to her now.”

Emma nodded.

She appreciated that Elisabeth did not attempt to make the situation simpler than it was.

Regret did not automatically mean change.

Emma returned the photographs to the envelope.

“Do you know where Helena lives?”

“Not her current address. But I may be able to help you find a way to contact her.”

Emma hesitated.
